When you'd do this
You're building a lossless archive or library and want your WAVs (or anything else) in one compact, lossless format.
What to expect
A minute of CD-quality sound is about 10 MB as a WAV and at most about 7.6 MB as a FLAC — often closer to half the WAV.
Recommended settings
Match the source: 24-bit for 24-bit studio files, 16-bit (the default) for everything else.
Where it plays
Android, Windows, VLC, foobar2000 and most music players; on iPhone in Files and VLC. Not iTunes or Apple Music.
Good to know
- A FLAC made here can be up to 60 minutes long.
- Only a lossless source (WAV, FLAC) gives a truly lossless FLAC; from MP3 or AAC it keeps their sound, losses and all.
How to do it
- Choose your audio files, or drop them on the page — any mix of formats.
- Each is set to FLAC. Change one on its own row if you like, and the bit depth and the channels in Settings.
- Convert all, then download each FLAC, or all of them in one .zip.
Questions
- Is FLAC lossless?
- Yes: it gives back exactly the samples that went in.
- Can I convert MP3 to FLAC to get better quality?
- No — the FLAC keeps the MP3's sound, losses and all.
- Can I convert many files at once?
- Yes, and download them together as a .zip.
