How to do it
- Choose your files, drop them on the page or paste them — sound files, or videos whose sound you want. Add as many as you like, in any mix of formats.
- On each file's row, pick what it becomes in Convert to. A file starts as an MP3 (an MP3 starts as a WAV).
- To set every file to the same format at once, open Settings and choose it in Convert to. Settings also holds the bitrates, the channels and the bit depth for WAV and FLAC.
- Press Convert all, or Convert on one row. You can cancel at any time.
- Download each file from its row, or press Download all to get them in one .zip.
Questions
- Are my files uploaded?
- No. Every file is read and converted in your browser, on your device, and never leaves it.
- Which formats can I convert?
- MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, M4B, AAC, OGA and WEBA, into any of those or MP4. From an MP4, MOV or WEBM video you get just the sound. Apple Lossless, AIFF, WMA, AMR, MP2, Speex and Dolby (AC-3) can't be read.
- Which bitrate should I choose?
- Higher sounds better and makes bigger files. MP3 starts at 192 kbps, which suits most music; 128 kbps is plenty for speech, and 320 kbps is the most MP3 can hold.
- How big can my files be?
- A WAV can be up to 2 GB and 4 hours, an MP3 up to 100 MB and 30 minutes, and other files up to 2 GB. A WAV, FLAC or MP3 you make can be up to 60 minutes long (an MP3 from a WAV, 4 hours), and the other formats up to 5 hours. A format a file is too long for is greyed out on its row.
- Are chapters, titles and cover art kept?
- Chapters are kept when an M4B or M4A becomes an M4B or M4A. Titles, artist names and cover art aren't copied into the new file.
- Why can't Firefox make M4A or MP4 files?
- Making M4A, MP4, M4B and AAC needs the browser's own AAC encoder, which Firefox doesn't have yet. It can still make them as copies, when the sound is already AAC. Chrome, Edge and Safari make them from any file.
