When you'd do this
You want to edit or transcribe an M4A — an iPhone voice memo, an interview, a song — in software that only takes WAV.
What to expect
A 4-minute M4A at 256 kbps is about 7.3 MB; the WAV at 16-bit is about 40 MB.
Recommended settings
16-bit (the default). An M4A is compressed AAC, so a 24-bit WAV holds nothing more — just more bytes.
Where it plays
Any editor, Windows, macOS, iTunes and phones.
Good to know
- Lossy to lossless can't bring back what the M4A's compression removed; the WAV keeps the sound as it is.
- Chapters aren't kept — only M4B and M4A keep chapters.
- A WAV made here can be up to 60 minutes long.
How to do it
- Choose your M4A files, or drop them on the page — as many as you like.
- Each is set to WAV. Change one on its own row if you like, and the bit depth and the channels in Settings.
- Convert all, then download each WAV, or all of them in one .zip.
Questions
- How do I convert a voice memo to WAV?
- Save the memo to Files (it's an M4A), choose it here and press Convert.
- Will the WAV sound better than the M4A?
- No — the same, uncompressed. It's for editing and software that needs WAV.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. Your file is converted in your browser.
