When you'd do this
You need a still from a GIF — a logo, an icon or a diagram saved as GIF years ago, or the opening frame of an animation — in a format editors and design tools handle better.
What to expect
The PNG has the GIF's exact colours and size, and its clear pixels stay clear. An animated GIF gives a PNG of its first frame only; the row says so before you convert.
Recommended settings
PNG has no Quality — it's lossless. If you're hoping to make an old, small icon bigger, this won't do it: Resize only ever scales down.
Where it opens
Every editor, design tool, office suite, browser and device.
Good to know
- Only the first frame of an animated GIF is converted — the PNG is a still. Choose WebP to keep the animation.
- The GIF's 256-colour limit stays in the picture: PNG can't add back colours the GIF never had.
- PNG's transparency can be smooth, but the GIF's edges stay as they were — clear or solid.
How to do it
- Choose your GIF files, or drop or paste them on the page — as many as you like.
- Each is set to PNG. Change one on its own row if you like, and set Resize in Settings.
- Convert all, then download each PNG, or all of them in one .zip.
Questions
- Can I convert an animated GIF to PNG?
- You get its first frame as a still PNG. For a moving image in a modern format, convert the GIF to WebP instead.
- Does GIF to PNG keep transparency?
- Yes. Clear pixels in the GIF stay clear in the PNG.
- Is GIF to PNG lossless?
- Yes. Every pixel of the frame comes across exactly.
