When you'd do this
You're putting images on a website and want pages to load faster. WebP is usually much smaller than PNG for the same look, keeps transparency, and every current browser shows it.
What to expect
At 80% (lossy, the default) a PNG photo or illustration usually shrinks dramatically, transparency and all. With WebP Lossless on, every opaque pixel is kept exactly — soft edges look just as they did — and the file is still usually smaller than the PNG. Width and height stay the same unless you Resize — and a WebP can be at most 16,383 px a side.
Recommended settings
Lossy at 80% for photos and illustrations. Turn on WebP Lossless for screenshots, logos, icons and pixel art, where lossy compression smudges sharp edges and flat colour.
Where it opens
Every current browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur or later — WordPress 5.8 and later, and most modern image editors. Some older apps, email clients and upload forms still don't take WebP.
Good to know
- A WebP can be at most 16,383 px on a side: anything wider or taller is scaled down to fit, and the row says so.
- An animated PNG (APNG) becomes a still WebP of its first frame.
- Keep the PNGs if you'll edit again: lossy WebP leaves detail out.
How to do it
- Choose your PNG files, or drop or paste them on the page — as many as you like.
- Each is set to WebP. Change one on its own row if you like, and set Quality, WebP Lossless and Resize in Settings.
- Convert all, then download each WebP, or all of them in one .zip.
Questions
- Is WebP better than PNG?
- For the web, usually: smaller files with the same look, and transparency too. PNG is still the safer choice for editing and for apps that don't know WebP.
- Does PNG to WebP keep transparency?
- Yes — both lossy and lossless WebP keep it.
- Should I use lossy or lossless WebP?
- Lossy (80%) for photos and illustrations; lossless for screenshots, logos and pixel art.
- Can I convert a whole folder of PNGs?
- Yes. Select or drop them all, press Convert all, and download the WebPs in one .zip.
